Doc of the Day: The Louisiana Purchase Treaty
04/30/10
The Louisiana Purchase Treaty was signed by representatives of the United States and France on April 30, 1803. Under its terms, the United States paid the equivalent of $15 million to acquire more than 828,000 square miles of French territory in North America. The land area covered by the Louisiana Purchase, encompassing all or part of 14 states, effectively doubled the size of the United States. After signing the agreement, American ambassador Robert Livingston famously declared, “We have lived long, but this is the noblest work of our whole lives…. The United States take rank this day among the first powers of the world.”
