Doc of the Day: William McKinley’s Message to Congress about Cuban Intervention
04/25/10
On April 25, 1898, following a period of escalating tension over Spanish colonial authority in Cuba, the United States declared war against Spain. Congress took this step in response to President William McKinley’s message about Cuban intervention, which outlined the many ways in which the Cuban conflict negatively affected U.S. interests.
The Spanish-American War only lasted a few months, but the decisive U.S. victory cemented the nation’s stature as a world power. The Treaty of Paris that ended the war secured Cuban independence and gave the United States authority over vast new territory, including the islands of Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines. The 1898 Annual Report of the Secretary of the Navy describes some of the major battles and their outcomes.
