In the News: The Nuclear Security Summit
04/14/10
The Nuclear Security Summit, which involved leaders from 47 nations, concluded on April 13, 2010, with attendees endorsing U.S. President Barack Obama’s call to secure vulnerable nuclear materials around the world by 2012. In his remarks opening the conference, Obama stressed the importance of preventing such materials from falling into the hands of terrorists. “Just the smallest amount of plutonium—about the size of an apple—could kill and injure hundreds of thousands of innocent people,” he stated. “It is increasingly clear that the danger of nuclear terrorism is one of the greatest threats to global security.”
