Today in History: Adolf Hitler Is Born

One of the most despised figures in world history, Adolf Hitler, was born in Austria on April 20, 1889. Hitler steadily gained political support during the 1920s as head of the National Socialist German Workers Party, better known as the Nazi Party. After being appointed chancellor of Germany in 1933, Hitler delivered a proclamation to the German people in which he promised to restore Germany to its former stature as a world power. Under Hitler’s direction, Nazi Germany attempted to take over Europe, resulting in World War II. Hitler’s twisted quest for world domination also resulted in the Holocaust—the murder of six million European Jews at Nazi hands.
