Today in History: The Oklahoma City Bombing
04/19/10
On April 19, 1995, a truck bomb exploded in front of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, taking the lives of 168 people and causing more than $600 million in property damage. The Oklahoma City Bombing was the deadliest act of terrorism on American soil up to that time. Timothy McVeigh, a member of an anti-government militia, was convicted of planning and carrying out the bombing in a 1997 trial. He was executed by lethal injection in 2001.
A few days after the tragedy, President Bill Clinton gave a speech at the memorial service for victims of the Oklahoma City bombing. “We pledge to do all we can to help you heal the injured, to rebuild this city, and to bring to justice those who did this evil,” he declared.
